What is in a name with Rabbi Cotlar

Our Creator used the Hebrew Letters as the building blocks or programming code of His creation. This means that our Hebrew name and the name of everything in this world has tremendous significance.  In this episode we are joined by my dear friend and teacher, Rabbi Daniel Cotlar, to elucidate for us the significance of what is in a name.

Parsha: Tazria – Torah In A Box

The bulk of our Parsha deals with the inapplicable laws of purity and impurity, but we also told about a Mitzvah that is very much applicable today: circumcision. When a baby boy is 8 days old, they are circumcised and thereby entered into the Covenant of Abraham. What is the meaning behind this Mitzvah? Why, in fact, are we altering the product given to us by God? In this Very special edition of the Parsha Podcast, I share what I said at the Bris (circumcision ceremony) of my son, Yisrael Meir Wolbe. For the exquisite insight segment, I am joined by my daughter, Miriam, who shared the saga of her lost camera and the lessons that she learned. This is a very Wolbe-family-centric episode, but I’m convinced that you will enjoy it.

TORAH 101: The Origin of the Soul

The Soul is perhaps the loftiest creation of God. Our Sages tell us that the Soul is even loftier than Angels. What does that mean? What is the nature of the relationship of the Soul to its Creator? What are the properties of the Soul? In this fundamental podcast you will learn about the origin of the Soul. You will also be treated to a comprehensive debunking of a heretical, but commonly held, understanding of the Soul. If you want to understand the permanent half of yourself, the part of you that lives on after death, this podcast is indispensable.

Parsha: Parshas Tazria (Rebroadcast)

A very large percentage of Torah is dedicated to the laws of purity and impurity. Parshas Tazria deals exclusively with these laws, first with respect to the impurity of a new mother, and second with the impurity of tzaraas a skin disease that comes as a result of sin. What is purity and impurity and how can we make these difficult concepts more relevant to modern life.

Connecting the Spiritual and Physical Worlds with Rabbi Bresler

The topic explored today is why the Almighty instructed us to build a Mishkan (Tabernacle), the subsequent Temples and why the Jewish people have been yearning for millennia, for the building of our third and permanent Temple. In this episode our guest Rabbi Menachem Bresler enlightens us to the purpose of the Temple in allowing our Creator to dwell among us and unite the spiritual and physical worlds.

Parsha: Shemini – Aaron’s Credentials

In our Parsha Aaron is promoted to become the high priest. Previously, Moshe served as high priest in an interim role, henceforth Aaron and his descendants will serve as the nation’s emissaries before God. Why was Aaron chosen? What were his qualifications? What were the events in his life that rendered him worthy of such a lofty role? In this very special episode, we examine our Sages’ very interesting teachings on Aaron’s qualifications. We learn how Aaron was initially diffident – he was bashful and hesitant to assume the role. But Moshe nudged him forward and showed him how he was particularly suited to be the high priest. What we discover is a counterintuitive lesson about who is best qualified to lead the masses.

This PP is dedicated by the Wolbe family in honor of our new son, Yisrael Meir Wolbe. May he become a Tzadik and a Torah scholar – and just as he entered the Covenant of Abraham, may he enter Torah, the wedding canopy, and good deeds, and may he become someone who brings honor to his family, community, nation, and of course to his Father in Heaven.

We Have Been Blessed With a Baby Boy

With deep appreciation to the Almighty for all the goodness that He has bestowed upon us, I’m happy to share that my wife, Chaya, and I were blessed with a beautiful baby boy on Monday, March 14. Thank God, both Mom and baby are doing fabulous! In this special edition of the podcast, I share the idea that I said on Friday night at the Shalom Zachor of the new baby. May we share many simchos together and may we only hear good news from each other and from the rest of our brethren!

Parsha: Parshas Shemini (Rebroadcast)

After months of preparation and building, and a week of inauguration, the nation was anticipating the climax of the Tabernacle experience: When God finally rested His Presence upon the people’s handiwork. On the eighth day the Tabernacle was erected for good, and a Heavenly fire consumed the various sacrifices offered upon the Altar and the nation experienced the euphoria and intense trepidation of having God in their midst. But a second divine fire marred the joy when Aaron’s two sons were consumed for bringing a foreign and improper offering.

Parsha: Tzav – Ready, Steady, Fire!

A lot of things are needed for the Temple and the Tabernacle to function properly. There are all kinds of prerequisites, protocols, procedures, and rituals that must be followed. One of the most surprising ones is the requirement to always have a fire atop the altar. Although the fire is needed for the processing of sacrifices, there is a requirement to continuously have a fire ready even when there are no sacrifices to process. In this special edition of the Parsha Podcast, we explore the question of why? Why is it necessary to always have a fire atop the altar, even when there are no sacrifices to elevate.

The Book of Esther on an Allegorical Level (Rebroadcast)

On Purim we read the Book of Esther, which tells the story of the Purim miracle. The Persian king Achashverosh conspires with his Amalekite viceroy Haman to eradicate the entire Jewish nation, but God refused to allow their plans to unfold. Queen Esther, together with her relative Mordechai, spearhead the effort to turn the plan on it’s head: Instead of Haman killing Mordechai and the Jews; the Jews were given free rein to destroy their enemies. Every year we commemorate this miracle on the holiday of Purim. But the story goes deeper. Every part of Torah can be understood on multiple dimensions. The Gaon of Vilna wrote a masterful commentary explaining the Book on an allegorical level, in which the characters and the storylines symbolize the various conflicts of our lives. What emerges is a stunning portrayal of central components of Jewish philosophy that also contains very incisive lessons for Purim itself.
