Sukkos: The Sukkah and The Lulav

The two mitzvos of the Festival of Sukkos (Sukkot) are the shaking of the Lulav and the Four Species and the dwelling in the Sukkah. What is the deeper meaning behind these mitzvos? In this special pre-Festival episode, we examine the two mitzvos of Sukkos and see what they teach us about the Festival in general, and see how they can guide us to have a more uplifting and meaningful and productive Sukkot.

Mitzvah: Loaning the Needy (#66)

Even greater than the mitzvah of giving charity, of helping the needy by giving them a handout, is the mitzvah of loaning them money in their time of financial despair. Although charity may solve a pauper’s problem, a timely loan may prevent it.

Returning to our Source

The Almighty desires for us to continually strengthen ourselves spiritually so that we can grow closer to Him. Just like a weightlifter intentionally exhausts their muscles under the weights they are lifting so that their muscles will tear and then be rebuilt to be stronger, the Almighty created a framework for us to do the same spiritually. He orchestrates events which create tests for us. Tests to challenge and strengthen ourselves. Even through sin, followed by teshuva, we rebuild ourselves by returning to our source, creating ourselves anew and as a better version than we were prior. In this episode, Rabbi Buscko goes deep into how we can use the gift of Yom Kippur to successfully accomplish this task.

Parsha: Ha’azinu – Shattering The 6 Biggest Myths about Yom Kippur

The Shabbos before Yom Kippur, when we read the penultimate parsha, Parshas Ha’azinu, is known as “Shabbos Shuva”, the Shabbos of Repentance. On this day, we are urged to get into the spirit of repentance ahead of Yom Kippur, the day of repentance. But Yom Kippur – and repentance in general – seem challenging to many of us. In this special edition of the Parsha Podcast we outline the 6 biggest obstacles inhibiting people from fully immersing themselves in Yom Kippur and repentance, and we demonstrate how these 6 reasons are actually myths. What emerges from this unique episode is a fresh approach to the Days of Awe, Yom Kippur, and the critical mitzvah of repentance.

Yom Kippur: The Repentance Continuum

The Ten Days of Repentance, beginning with the two days of Rosh Hashana and culminating in Yom Kippur, are the season of repentance in the Jewish calendar. On these days, the Almighty is close to us. Our prayers are more efficacious. Our spiritual accomplishments are amplified and accelerated during these powerful, awesome days. Our Sages have noted that the Torah section dedicated to repentance, Parshas Nitzavim, is read each year on the Shabbos immediately preceding the Ten Days of Repentance in order to get us in the repentance mode and to guide us how exactly to do it. In this special podcast episode we plumb the repentance narratives of Parshas Nitzavim to extract several ideas that can make our Days of Repentance, and of course our Yom Kippur, more meaningful and productive.

TORAH 101

Awake from your Slumber!

G-d blew a soul into Adam. On Rosh Hashanah we blow into the Shofar, tapping into the core of our soul to awaken us from our slumber. We are reminding ourselves of our mission. G-d is the King and we are His subjects. Our tasks at hand is the loftiest of all tasks, to be His co-creators and bring Godliness to every corner of the world. This is a must listen episode, as Rabbi Wohlgelernter teaches us how to be successful this Rosh Hashanah by setting ourselves on a trajectory to accomplish our goal.

Parsha: Nitzavim – Spiritual Interdependence

The Jewish nation is unlike every other nation. We are the “Chosen People”. We are “The Nation of God”. What does it mean to be the nation of God? In this podcast we discover that the Jewish people are bound together in the deepest fashion. Each one of us has a portion of our Soul that is entrusted within every other Jew, and within us there is a small piece of every other Jew. The implications of this unique spiritual physiology are vast!

TORAH 101

TORAH 101: What is Mishnah?

For 1500 years, Oral Torah was just that: Oral. It was not committed to canonized writing. Circa 200 CE, that changed. Under the leadership of Rabbi Judah the Prince, the Nasi of the Sanhedrin, and the greatest Sage of his day, the laws of Oral Torah were codified and canonized in a series of 63 books called “Mishnah”. What was this process like? Under what authority was this decision made? How was the final work shaped to maintain the style and flavor of Oral Torah?

TORAH 101

Thanks a Million!

Of all the episodes that I have recorded over the years, this will be perhaps the most unique one. For one, it will be released simultaneously on all 6 channels that I am fortunate enough to host: The Parsha Podcast, The Jewish History Podcast, The Mitzvah Podcast , This Jewish Life, The Ethics Podcast, and TORAH 101, and of course on the podcast channel that hosts all of my podcasts on one feed – All Rabbi Yaakov Wolbe Podcasts. The reason for this is that I wanted to share a momentous milestone with my podcast family, and to share a bit of my personal story. A few days ago, the podcasts tallied their millionth download. In honor of this tremendous milestone, I wanted to dedicate an episode to publicly thanking the Almighty for all that He did for me; I wanted to thank my family and friends;  I wanted to thank the listeners who have invested a staggering amount of time into the podcasts; and of course the donors who partnered with me in this venture. If not for y’all, I’d be selling cabinets or mortgages.

TORAH 101

Jews and Politics

We received Torah Law from the Almighty to instruct us on maintaining a utopian society, however Torah Law in totality is intended for when the Jewish people return to Israel, the temple is rebuilt and the Sanhedrin Court reestablished. So, if that is the case, what are our responsibilities in our host nations? How involved should we be in politics? Should a Jew hold public office? Should Torah influence our voting in our host nation? These questions and many more are answered in this episode’s platform discussion with the dynamic duo; Rabbi Aryeh Wolbe and Rabbi Yaakov Wolbe.
